Abstract
In Sweden, it is reported that a lot of Social Services are having difficulties recruiting staff, especially experienced staff. With a high turnover rate and a great need for social workers in these areas of work, this study aimed to investigate social work students’ attitudes towards work with the exercise of public authority and try to detect which factors could be affecting these attitudes. The study also includes a correlation analysis to investigate whether social work students with work experience had a more positive or negative attitude towards work with the exercise of public authority. The study is based on a survey that was distributed to social work students from different higher education institutions in Sweden. A total of 181... (More)

The study also includes a correlation analysis to investigate whether social work students with work experience had a more positive or negative attitude towards work with the exercise of public authority. The study is based on a survey that was distributed to social work students from different higher education institutions in Sweden. A total of 181 social work students replied and the collected data was presented through statistical analysis. The result implies that social work students have a bad attitude towards professions that include the exercise of public authority. Social work students are under the impression that they would have an unsustainable workload within these professions. The negative attitude remains, regardless of the social work students’ work experience. The results also imply that social work students only wish to work within these professions for shorter periods, but when asked directly whether they find professions with the exercise of public authority attractive, the majority replied that they do.
