Abstract
Planning for an aging population is a phenomenon that has become increasingly more pertinent for Swedish planning agencies. As the number of people within the oldest age groups is rising, the society as a whole is faced with challenges in order to accommodate the increased number of elderly. One key concept within elderly urban planning is mobility, which describes an individual's ability or capacity to move to a certain destination. Barriers in the outdoor environment and aggravating factors such as movement disorders play an important role concerning mobility. Therefore, this qualitative case study aims to explore the perceived and realised constraints and capabilities for the elderly's mobility through semi-structured interviews,... (More)
Planning for an aging population is a phenomenon that has become increasingly more pertinent for Swedish planning agencies. Therefore, this qualitative case study aims to explore the perceived and realised constraints and capabilities for the elderly's mobility through semi-structured interviews, seeking to identify the movement-capabilities in the daily activities of people above the age of 65 residing in Eriksberg, in Gothenburg. This work applies Sen’s Capability Approach to the issue of mobility, a framework illustrating people’s perception and achievements of movements with regards to wellbeing. The findings indicate that there are certain factors in the built environment that have a reducing impact on some people’s perceived mobility, such as icy roads and loose stone tiles. The interviews also revealed a few functionalities to mobility, such as the Senior citizen card and the ability to use the ferry as an additional alternative for mobility. In relation to a few selected planning documents by Göteborgs Stads, elderly’s mobility-needs seems to be a prioritized topic as this work recognized discernible links between the interviewees' experiences and the authority’s activities to transform Gothenburg into an age-friendly city.
