This study investigates the perceptions and experiences of school counselors working with adolescents amidst the increasing influence of social media and digital platforms. Utilizing a qualitative research approach, data was gathered through semi-structured interviews with six different school counselors in two Swedish municipalities and then analyzed through a theoretical framework focusing on dynamic environments and professional discretion in social work. The findings reveal that counselors face several challenges due to the lack of specific guidelines for addressing issues related to social media use, forcing them to overly rely on professional discretion and acquire knowledge of social media independently. This autonomy is shown to lead to feelings of uncertainty in their professional roles. A focus on enhancing and clarifying existing guidelines along with assigning resources aimed specifically at challenges brought by social media and digital platforms could serve to reduce this uncertainty and improve the quality of support provided to students.
