- Abstract
- Off-grid living offers an alternative path to sustainability, but its complex dynamics require deeper exploration. Utilizing the Three Spheres of Transformation theoretical framework, the study uses interviews to explore the motivations for, barriers to and necessary changes for off-grid living from the perspective of individuals. Findings from interviews with people living and aspiring to live off-grid in Sweden indicate that personal motivations such as environmental awareness and the desire for self-sufficiency are important motivators for off-grid living. However, practical and political barriers such as operational challenges, financial constraints, regulatory barriers and social norms impede the decision to live off-grid. The study... (More)

The study highlights the critical role of technological advances, community building, increased policy support and educational initiatives to overcome barriers. The findings underscore the interconnectedness of different spheres and the importance of coordinated efforts at the individual, societal and policy levels to drive transformative change towards off-grid living.
