(2024) BUSN09 20241Department of Business Administration
- Abstract
- This research paper seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the barriers hindering the integration of sustainability in construction companies, with a focus on understanding both internal and external barriers influencing this transition. - This research paper seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the barriers hindering the integration of sustainability in construction companies, with a focus on understanding both internal and external barriers influencing this transition. Through the analysis of the viewpoints of various stakeholders, such as project managers, frontline employees, and business executives, this paper aims to identify the problems involved with integrating sustainability practices. To achieve this, a qualitative abductive approach was chosen to provide flexibility in interpreting all aspects of the data gathered. By iterating between theory and empirical findings, this study provides a broad examination of the barriers to sustainability integration.
As part of a case study aimed at understanding sustainable development in the construction sector and the associated barriers, 13 interviews were conducted with experts from the
construction industry in Bulgaria, Germany, and Sweden. The findings of this thesis indicate that, on the one hand, understanding the barriers to sustainability in construction requires interviewing individuals from diverse roles within companies and from different countries. On the other hand, the findings highlight that these barriers are interconnected, illustrating that a lack of client demand is closely linked to internal cost structures. Overall, the findings show that to effectively tackle external barriers such as market demand, construction companies must simultaneously implement internal strategies that align organizational culture with sustainability goals.
