Abstract
The purpose of this study has been to examine how family counselors with a social work degree perceive their role within the inpatient care of child - and adolescent psychiatry. The empirical data consisted of interviews with six family counselors, all of whom are social workers and work in inpatient care. The study is based on a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, where the interviews conducted were semi-structured. The choice of a qualitative method enabled the family counselors to describe their experiences and thoughts regarding their role. Additionally, the semi-structured interviews allowed the participants to provide spontaneous and in-depth responses that they deemed relevant to convey about the family counselor... (More)
The purpose of this study has been to examine how family counselors with a social work degree perceive their role within the inpatient care of child - and adolescent psychiatry. Additionally, the semi-structured interviews allowed the participants to provide spontaneous and in-depth responses that they deemed relevant to convey about the family counselor role. The study shows that family counselors strongly identify with their professional role as social workers. Furthermore, many of them experience ambiguity in their role as family counselors because they are not able to utilize their social work skills in the form of qualified tasks, and this is reflected in the team due to a lack of respect for social work competence. In connection with this, it emerges that the family counselor’s expectations of the role do not align with how it is designed, often leading to a role conflict where personal expectations do not match. The results also show that the family counselors perceive that the role has the potential to develop, but the challenges are significant as they lie outside their scope of action. Despite this, some family counselors choose to remain in their role due to a personal commitment to developing the role. (Less)
