The purpose of this thesis was to investigate how financial violence is identified and to determine the measures taken by professionals working with financial assistance in social services, focused on financially abused women. In this thesis, a qualitative research approach was applied, where data is collected through semi-structured interviews with professionally active social workers within financial assistance at social services. The identification and recruitment of suitable interviewees were based on the usage of both convenience sampling and targeted selection. In this thesis, the empirical material from the conducted interviews is analyzed about the previous literature and research as well as the theoretical framework. The results of the thesis showed that, first of all, financial violence is considered to be invisible for both the social workers and the abused women. The thesis revealed multiple criteria used by social workers to identify financial violence, for example, asking more open-ended questions about violence and conducting physical meetings with the couple as well as individual meetings. Secondly, the thesis identifies the measures taken by social workers to support financially abused women. Such measures were, for instance, working closely with the social services’ reception for violence in intimate relationships, and providing the abused women with a pre-loaded card where the financial assistance is paid out. If the case considers an abused woman who chooses not to break up her relationship with the abuser, the social worker can take measures such as splitting up the household to minimize the risks and consequences of financial violence. Lastly, the analysis of this thesis identified several shortcomings in how social workers within financial assistance handle financial violence. For instance, there are deficiencies in social services’ knowledge, education, and routines regarding this type of violence. Therefore, social services should maintain better routines to support social workers in their role and help abused women by identifying financial violence and providing essential support. (Less)
