- Abstract
- This paper presents a study about whether university student's political and interpersonal trust is affected by gender and educational field. A primary question was also to study whether there was a difference in students’ trust in how social problems are managed and prevented by Sweden's elected politicians. In this study, the theory about social capital is applied where political trust constitutes the core of interpersonal trust as well as how social capital is created and affected. We have chosen a quantitative method which gave us a deductive approach through a survey study. The population in this study consists of students from two different faculties at Lunds University who were chosen because of their differences when it comes to... (More)
- This paper presents a study about whether university student's political and interpersonal trust is affected by gender and educational field. The population in this study consists of students from two different faculties at Lunds University who were chosen because of their differences when it comes to their educational field. Thus was the Faculty of Social Sciences and Lunds University’s Faculty of Engineering (LTH) chosen as representatives of this study. The results show some differences between the faculties, unfortunately, this difference was not as big as we hoped as it showed no statistical significance. There is high interpersonal trust among the students, however the political trust is rather low in both faculties. The answer to why the political trust is low can be explained by other factors that are partly included in the Rothstein theory. Our results also showed bigger differences in trust between the genders rather than the educational field, therefore gender may be a bigger factor in affecting the students’ trust. (Less)
