Abstract
Despite Sweden having implemented strict laws against child abuse and adopting the Convention on the Rights of the Child into law, child abuse remains a significant societal issue. Although it is clear that legal changes play a role in strengthening the protection and rights of children, legislation and actual circumstances do not always align. Despite Sweden having implemented strict laws against child abuse and adopting the Convention on the Rights of the Child into law, child abuse remains a significant societal issue. Although it is clear that legal changes play a role in strengthening the protection and rights of children, legislation and actual circumstances do not always align. This study aimed to highlight different experiences of a childhood embossed of a parent's physical, emotional, or latent violence and the consequences it risks to entail, to increase a deeper understanding. A qualitative method in the form of text analysis was used. Three self-biographies describing experiences of a parent’s violence have been used as a basis for this study. The material has been thematized, coded, and looked at with objectivity and used concerning get as detailed results and analysis work as possible. The study shows that physical, emotional, and latent violence has been experienced and entailed different consequences. Mental illness, in the shape of anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and suicide attempts is an outcome of violence. Even feelings of guilt and shame as well as non-healthy ways to regulate feelings, such as self-injurious behavior, substance abuse, eating disorders, and obsessions. The hardships in managing these consequences could also lead to inferior results in school, deteriorated work opportunities, and an impact on relations with others. The study has also identified risk factors such as a parent's substance abuse and/or mental illness and personal factors of the child, such as a psychiatric diagnosis. Some protective factors have also appeared, although the lack of protective factors has been more remarkable. This shows the importance of paying close attention to any appearing risk factors and working towards the strengthening of protective factors. It is important that society stands together and helps children in need. (Less)
