Abstract
In recent years, the interrelation between neurodivergent conditions such as ADHD and entrepreneurial activities has received increased attention within academic research. While several studies indicate that individuals displaying ADHD symptoms show elevated levels of entrepreneurial intention and action, other studies found that these do not necessarily translate into entrepreneurial success. While significant research has focused on the positive influence of ADHD on entrepreneurial intentions, little to no research has been done into the challenges faced by ADHD-entrepreneurs, and how this impedes successful entrepreneurial outcomes. In order to fill this gap, this study thus explores the negative entrepreneurial behaviors deriving from... (More)
In recent years, the interrelation between neurodivergent conditions such as ADHD and entrepreneurial activities has received increased attention within academic research. In order to fill this gap, this study thus explores the negative entrepreneurial behaviors deriving from ADHD symptoms that potentially lead to unproductive outcomes, as well as the coping strategies employed by ADHD-entrepreneurs to prevent or alternate these outcomes. Through qualitative interviews, we found that the ADHD dimensions hyperactivity/impulsivity and inattention lead to different sets of entrepreneurial behavior that have varying outcomes. The nature of these outcomes largely depends on the use of task-related and mind-set related coping strategies. These strategies boost productive entrepreneurial outcomes, creating a positive feedback loop that promotes long-term productivity through the effective management of ADHD-related behaviors. Our research enhances the understanding of the relationship between entrepreneurship and ADHD by introducing an integrative framework. This framework highlights the interrelationship of ADHD dimensions, behaviors, outcomes and coping strategies. In doing so, this study advances our comprehension of how ADHD influences the entrepreneurial process and offers insights into overcoming ADHD-related challenges to ensure entrepreneurial success.
