- Abstract
- Sexual health has been proven to be a considerable part of an individual's overall health, both mentally and physically. Therefore organizations such as WHO (The World Health Organization) have declared that all work relating to an individual's health and wellbeing should adopt a holistic approach. Therefore, this study aims to explore and acquire a better understanding of social work students' comfortability and thoughts on discussing sexual health in... (More)
- Sexual health has been proven to be a considerable part of an individual's overall health, both mentally and physically. Therefore organizations such as WHO (The World Health Organization) have declared that all work relating to an individual's health and wellbeing should adopt a holistic approach. Despite this, research has shown that a large number of professionals consider the subject of sexual health to be uncomfortable and hard to talk about. These studies have however largely examined the professionals' comfort in correlation to their measure of knowledge surrounding the subject. Therefore, this study aims to explore and acquire a better understanding of social work students' comfortability and thoughts on discussing sexual health in their future careers in regards to both knowledge but also social norms and tabu. The research has been compiled through a qualitative method using semi-structured interviews. The interviewees consisted of seven individuals studying social work at Lund University, during their fourth, fifth, or sixth semester in the program. The results show that knowledge affects the student's comfort but that education about sexual health is not something that is taught at the university. The result also shows that social norms and taboos affect the comfort of the student regarding both the client and the specific subject itself. Thus, this study concludes that social work students at Lund University do not feel comfortable discussing questions concerning sexual health with future clients, both because of a lack of knowledge but also due to an embedded feeling of not wanting to offend or upset the client by discussing sexual health.
