- Abstract
- This study aimed to explore older peoples' reasoning of sexuality as social relations. The study also aimed to examine how the elderly describe changes in their sexuality over time and how they relate to common views of older people's sexuality, as expressed in society. We conducted qualitative semi-structured interviews with six people, 65 years and older. From our empirical data, we obtained different views from the elderly. In our analysis, we focused on three main themes: change over time, aging as possible liberation or limitation, and how the elderly navigate societal expectations. The results showed that some testified that they experienced the same desire and pleasure as when they were young and that they did not suffer any major... (More)

In our analysis, we focused on three main themes: change over time, aging as possible liberation or limitation, and how the elderly navigate societal expectations. The results showed that some testified that they experienced the same desire and pleasure as when they were young and that they did not suffer any major changes regarding their sexuality. However, some of the respondents shared how they did not feel the same need or lust anymore, compared to when they were younger. All of the respondents testified that their body has gone through physical changes and they have different ways of navigating this. Furthermore, it discussed the elderly´s perceptions regarding prejudices that exist in society, about sexuality linked to the elderly, and how they relate to them. In this study, we have discussed differences in the elderly´s reflections by using theories about sexual scripts and stigma. The varying answers can demonstrate the fact that the elderly are a heterogeneous group with different individual reasonings. This study has attempted to highlight the importance of an understanding of older adults' reasonings to sexuality as social relations, from their perspective which could provide valuable insight into that life stage.
