Abstract (Swedish)

I sitt integrationsarbete fokuserade... (More)

(Less)
Abstract
The aim of this study was to find out how staff in non-profit organizations in Sweden describe the possibility of integration for refugees from the Middle East and refugees from Ukraine. This was researched according to the non-profit organizations own integration efforts, the Temporary Protection Directive, and the treatment the refugees get from the public. The study used a qualitative approach, more specifically interviews with staff within non-profit organizations. The interviews were analyzed using the theoretical framework presented to us by the deservingness theory and the promising victimhood theory.

The most important findings were that the non-profit organizations, in regard to the work with the refugees, are trying to complement the work in the public sector. In their work, in terms of integration, they focus on both social and systemic integration, through teaching Swedish and introducing the refugees to the Swedish society. Furthermore, the Temporary Protection Directive had an impact on the way the non-profit organizations conducted their work, since they have to adapt to where the public sector needs to adhere to the directive. Lastly, the staff saw a difference in the treatment between the two groups of refugees, with the Ukrainian refugees getting the better treatment because swedes may feel a stronger identification with them compared to the Middle Eastern refugees.
