Specialization of organizations and professions has led to an increased need for inter-organizational collaboration. This type of collaboration plays an important role in welfare organizations and social work in today's society. This study aims to provide a further understanding of professionals' experiences of collaboration between social services and psychiatry. The primary focus is on the target group of elderly with mental health issues. The participants in the study were social workers who work in inpatient psychiatric care facilities and social workers who work with care administration within the social services. The method used was individual interviews with the participants. These interviews were later analyzed with the help of concepts from organizational theory with the addition of professional discretion as a perspective. The study found that the professionals describe relationships, professional discretion, and understanding each other as aspects that are important in a well-functioning cooperation. Another finding was that the professionals described the division of responsibilities between the organizations as sometimes unclear. In addition to this, it becomes clear that the complex situations handled by professionals require a certain amount of professional discretion. Furthermore, it emerged that the specialisation of organizations has both possibilities and limitations in the collaborative work around the target group. (Less)
