Abstract (Swedish)
Abstract
Authenticity has been proven to be a significant component of well-being, but few studies with qualitative methodology have been conducted on the matter. The purpose of this study is to give a nuanced portrayal and an in-depth understanding of how state authenticity is experienced by Swedish, male high school students. We examine how state authenticity is experienced, the experience of the relation between authenticity and well-being, and what processes and contexts are perceived to enable or prevent authenticity. Semistructured interviews were conducted on nine participants, and the material analyzed through Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Five themes were distinguished: The role of authenticity for well-being, It starts... (More)
Authenticity has been proven to be a significant component of well-being, but few studies with qualitative methodology have been conducted on the matter. Five themes were distinguished: The role of authenticity for well-being, It starts with you, To be your “true self” is easier said than done, We are all influenced by the world we live in, and Social aspects for security and a place for growth. The authentic experience was described partly as an effortless and relaxing state, but also as something that takes courage. Authenticity and well-being were experienced to be connected in multiple ways. The participants perceived an accepting environment as well as trust and closeness in relationships to facilitate authenticity, whereas risking negative social consequences, being judged by others and external demands were perceived to prevent authenticity. Lastly, maturing and developmental processes as well as the individual's own responsibility, seemed to be important aspects of young people’s authentic experiences. This study deepens the understanding of how state authenticity can be experienced and highlights the relevance for further examination of how authenticity and well-being are related. (Less)
