- Abstract
- This thesis examines identity maintenance in the Kurdish diaspora, focusing on the ritual
aspects of identity maintenance. While previous research has focused on processes of Kurdish
diaspora formation and ethnic identity, this thesis will address existing discourses and consider
the Newroz celebration as an important factor in the maintenance of Kurdish identity within the
Kurdish diaspora in Sweden. Incorporating evidence from several ethnographic interviews and
a participatory observation, the research argues that, firstly, due to political and historical
struggles in the Kurdish homeland, resistance has become a central aspect of Kurdish identity
