- The media plays a significant role in providing information on an array of different matters and forming public opinion. Technological advancements have provided the public with newsoutlets at all hours of the day by simply picking up a smartphone from your pocket. This means that understanding how media presents issues to consumers is central in comprehending how present day society works. - The media plays a significant role in providing information on an array of different matters and forming public opinion. Technological advancements have provided the public with newsoutlets at all hours of the day by simply picking up a smartphone from your pocket. This means that understanding how media presents issues to consumers is central in comprehending how present day society works. Individuals throughout the world are free to consume information on topics from all over the globe, including Sweden. In recent years however, a new image of Sweden has emerged. One of a country plagued by organized crime, explosions and shootings. Considering the effect the media has on public perception (especially related to crime) and the significant increase in coverage on organized crime in Sweden by international media, this paper conducts a thematic analysis on western newspapers portrayal of gang-related criminal activity in the country. It does so with the following research questions:
1. What themes are central in western media's portrayal of organized crime, gangmembers and victims in Sweden?
2. Who is portrayed as responsible for organized crime in Sweden within international media?
To answer the research questions the paper uses a theoretical framework including Erwing Goffman's framing analysis aswell as Nils Christie´s The ideal victim. Using this framework the paper has identified what is central in western media’s reporting on organized crime in Sweden. Furthermore it pinpoints how these central themes are used to portray the described state of Sweden as a country and its values. The result of this study provides information about how the media uses themes of innocent victims and ruthless gangs fueled by money and status, to convey an image of a new Sweden torn apart by its inability to integrate migrants into Swedish society. This is referred to as a Swedish failure, not an issue caused by migrants and Sweden's problems with organized crime takes on a symbolic meaning of the death of its multicultural dream. (Less)
