Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore how professionals working with the evidence-based method Individual Placement and Support (IPS) reason regarding its utilization for a broader target audience than the method originally intended. Additionally, we sought to enhance the understanding of how and why an evidence-based method is modified and adapted when applied in a new setting and for a different demographic, as well as identifying potential challenges when providing employment support through the IPS method to a new target audience within a specific context. Our study focused on how employment specialists and IPS supervisors support people amid harmful use and addiction. The chosen methodology for this study involved qualitative... (More)
The aim of this study was to explore how professionals working with the evidence-based method Individual Placement and Support (IPS) reason regarding its utilization for a broader target audience than the method originally intended. The chosen methodology for this study involved qualitative interviews, which were conducted with four employment specialists and three IPS supervisors situated among bigger municipalities in southern Sweden. To analyze the empirical data we utilized theoretical frameworks centered around empowerment, recognition theory and the adaptability of evidence-based methods. The study reveals a positive attitude among professionals regarding the use of IPS with various target groups. The results indicate that this is possible due to the person-centered approach that the method adapts, focusing on the individual's strengths rather than their problems. The results indicate that certain adaptations of the method are made when applied in practice. These adaptations primarily occur due to differences between Sweden and the USA, as well as based on the specific context in which the method is applied. These deviations primarily concern aspects such as team formations and the utilization of internships. The results indicate that the main challenges are based on cooperation, both with other professionals as well as other authorities. This is due to the fact that the traditional Swedish perspective on individuals and vocational rehabilitation differs from the perspective that characterizes IPS. (Less)
