Abstract
History has shown that women in different times and settings have had their sexuality questioned and limited. Women have been called mentally ill, unworthy of being seen as a complete individual and their virginity has been a central subject for discussion. Within the last decades, online forums have been created internationally, where people can discuss taboo subjects anonymously. Many studies have been made on international incel forums, but within the Swedish online forums, there has been a lack of research on female sexuality. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate how users of the Swedish online forum Flashback Forum construct female sexuality. Flashback Forum is not an incel forum, but instead, Sweden's biggest discussion forum online, where many different topics can be found. Since our data was collected from an online forum a netnographic method, within the framework of qualitative method, was chosen. This study is a product of analyzing four different threads on Flashback Forum, all within the subject of female sexuality, resulting in over 3000 comments. This study has been analyzed with the theories of social constructivism, binary views on gender relations, and respectability. The study found that the opinions online were aligned with the previously made studies on the subject. It was expressed from the users on Flashback Forum that women were categorized as being either respected or un-respected depending on their sexual behavior. The women discussed online were objectified, and harassed with negative opinions about their sexuality and a strong opinion was shown on the differences between the sexuality of men versus women.
