Abstract
This study aims to explore attitudes towards drugs among social work students and nursing students at Lund University. The objective is to analyze the potential differences between these two groups of students and the connection between the students' potential experiences with drugs and their attitudes. This study aims to explore attitudes towards drugs among social work students and nursing students at Lund University. The objective is to analyze the potential differences between these two groups of students and the connection between the students' potential experiences with drugs and their attitudes. The Tripartite model of attitudes was used as the theoretical framework, with questions designed to measure the cognitive, affective, and behavioral components. A quantitative method was employed, involving an online survey that included questions about the students' views, feelings, and personal experiences with drugs. In total 1455 social work and nursing students at Lund University were asked to participate and the response rate was 37,3 %. The results show that the majority of the students have a negative attitude towards drugs. No significant difference was found between social work and nursing students in positive or negative attitudes. However, nursing students were almost twice as likely to respond that they felt disgusted when thinking about drugs. The study also shows that having tried any narcotic at least once had a significant correlation with a more positive attitude toward drugs. The same group was also more likely to respond that they felt unaffected when they thought about drugs and less likely to feel disgust when thinking about drugs. No significant differences were found in how the attitudes changed throughout the educational programs but for the social workers, the result was borderline at p = 0,062 indicating that attitudes got more negative as students progressed.
