Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate how professionals working with men who are victims of violence in heterosexual relationships perceive how norms and expectations in society affect the target group and the work in this field. The empirical material was based on eight interviews with professionals in different parts of Sweden who have come into contact with the target group in their work. The material was analyzed using previous research and theories about recognition, scripts and hegemonic masculinity. The study found that professionals perceive that men who have experienced violence can feel shame and lack of recognition as a consequence of norms and expectations in society. One explanation entertained in the study is the impact of norms about masculinity and the absence of a script for being a male victim of intimate partner violence. The study also showed that professionals work to support men who have experienced intimate partner violence by focusing on the individual , rather than working with fixed routines during the interaction. Professionals also emphasized establishing trust during conversations. Furthermore, the results showed that organizations work to address individuals who have experienced violence regardless of gender identity. Finally, the study showed that help organizations do not specifically reach out to men and that their support material are primarily directed towards women. (Less)
