Abstract (Swedish)
The aim of this study was to understand and explain which social and structural risk factors are behind young people choosing to commit criminal acts, in order to increase awareness of the problem. The method that was selected in this study was a qualitative method based on autobiographies and biographies. Four different autobiographies were used as empirical evidence and the analysis of the autobiographies was based on a thematic analysis. In the analysis of the results of the study, the following two theories were used: Robert Merton's strain theory and Travis Hirschi's theory of social bonds. The results demonstrate that there is not only one risk factor that plays a role in whether the young person develops deviant behavior, but there... (More)

In the analysis of the results of the study, the following two theories were used: Robert Merton's strain theory and Travis Hirschi's theory of social bonds. The results demonstrate that there is not only one risk factor that plays a role in whether the young person develops deviant behavior, but there are several different factors that interact with each other and which in turn increase the risk of the person committing criminal acts. Based on the autobiographies used in the study, we can see that several of the people describe that, among other things, poverty, alienation, a lack of good relationships within the family and poor housing situations lead to a weakened upbringing which in turn causes them to choose a different path than what which is considered normal by the environment.
