Abstract
This thesis investigates the key factors influencing startup decisions to reintegrate environmental sustainability objectives (ESO). By adopting an inductive and deductive qualitative approach the study uses semi-structured interviews to investigate the decisionmaking of five startups that have undergone ESO reintegration. The findings lead to the establishment of a theoretic framework by identifying four aggregate themes: Holistic Professional Development, Value-based Development, Business Growth Opportunities, and Market Development. Detailed analysis has led to 4 key findings. (1) It was confirmed that the decision-making processes towards ESO reintegration are highly complex where several factors influence each other, and often various... (More)
This thesis investigates the key factors influencing startup decisions to reintegrate environmental sustainability objectives (ESO). (1) It was confirmed that the decision-making processes towards ESO reintegration are highly complex where several factors influence each other, and often various aspects need to align for reintegration to be made. (2) It was found that the decision-making is driven by internal factors such as Industry Experience and Contacts, Financial Security, and Ethical and Intrinsic Motives, with external market developments playing a significant but secondary role. (3) The 4 identified aggregate themes and 8 underlying second order themes have led to the creation of a theoretical framework highlighting the dialectic relationships and interplays between them. (4) The identified factors that influence startup decision making towards ESO reintegration reveal both push and pull aspects that shape entrepreneurial actions. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of sustainable entrepreneurship, offering practical implications for businesses, policymakers, and researchers aiming to foster environmental sustainability in the entrepreneurial sector. The developed framework may serve as the basis for further research in entrepreneurial and sustainability decision making field. (Less)
