The Impact of Bilingual Linguistic Factors on Cognitive Control in a Chinese-English Bilingual Sample: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach
(2024) PSYP01 20241Department of Psychology
- Abstract
- The main aim of this study was to investigate how individual differences in second language linguistic factors affect cognitive control subcomponents based on controlling for non-linguistic factors. More specifically, while controlling cultural background, age and educational level, this study examined how the age of second language acquisition, second language proficiency, second language usage, and language switching frequency affect different cognitive control subcomponents (inhibition, shifting, and updating). In addition, this study used structural equation modeling that allows for the simultaneous examination of complex interactions between multiple variables. A combination of questionnaires and experiments was used in this study.... (More)

A combination of questionnaires and experiments was used in this study. The information related to the participants’ linguistic factors was collected by questionnaire, and the cognitive control data were collected by experiments. The experiments included the Color-shape task, the N-back task, and the Number Stroop task to respectively measure shifting, updating and inhibition. 223 participants took part in the study. The results from the structural equation modeling analysis show that second language proficiency and language switching frequency significantly and positively affect updating and shifting, and second language usage significantly and positively affects inhibition and updating. This study explores the effects of the bilingual effects on cognitive control more comprehensively in terms of both linguistic and non-linguistic factors, deepening the understanding of how bilingualism affects cognitive control, and the use of structural equation modeling enhances the reliability of the findings. In general, this study shows that different aspects of the second language affect different aspects of cognitive control, showing that enhancing specific language skills can lead to targeted improvements in particular cognitive control subcomponents.
