Abstract

This study presents refugees' experiences of forming a social network in Swedish elementary schools during the refugee crisis year 2015. The aim of the paper is to extract an understanding of refugees' experiences of undergoing the process of being placed in preparatory class and later in ordinary class. This study has been approached through a qualitative method in the form of semi- structured interviews. Six interviews have been conducted with refugees that arrived during the 2015 refugee crisis and went to elementary school in Sweden. This paper will examine the interviewers' stories based on three different theoretical starting points: social integration, collective deviance and socialization. The conclusion of this study is that the interviewers conveyed the difficulties of forming a social network, especially in the beginning of their schooling. Most of the interviewers claim that a formation of a social network was developed in the preparatory class. The interviewers also established a social network over time in the ordinary class, despite their difficulties as a newly arrived in Sweden. An important finding in the study is that an increased knowledge of the Swedish language among the study's interviewers, has been a key factor in the development of a social network in the Swedish elementary school. Based on the study, further research could be interesting on refugees' academic progress in school, how some refugees develop a social network and others do not or why refugees' integration looks different.
