- This thesis investigates the significance of the language used between colleagues for their experience of psychological safety in Swedish workplaces. Utilising theories of social undermining and communicative accommodation theory, the study addresses the lack of knowledge about employees' contributions to developing psychological safety and the importance of language in this context.
The study shows that the language used in the workplace significantly impacts employees' willingness to share ideas or express criticism. It highlights that a mix of informal and formal language among colleagues facilitates cooperation and builds trust, contributing to a psychologically safer workplace.
The study concludes that employees have the primary responsibility for creating a psychologically safe work environment.
The study provides new insights and knowledge to the field of psychological safety, emphasizing the importance of examining the role of language in its development. It also advances existing theories of social undermining and communicative accommodation theory, specifically how these theories can be applied to understand the impact of linguistic actions on employees' sense of psychological safety.
