Abstract
This study explores the potential threats to masculinity perceived in societies with a high gender equality and examines whether such threat can be linked to an increase in involuntary celibate (incel) traits among the male population in. The research employs a quantitative methodology with two experimental conditions: one featuring a high equal scenario and another a low equal scenario, depicting contrasting gender roles in a fictional country. Previous studies indicate that an increase in female leadership and women's rights can act as a catalyst for masculinity threats, potentially leading to an increase in incel characteristics in some men, thereby contributing to a higher incel population in countries with greater female autonomy and... The research employs a quantitative methodology with two experimental conditions: one featuring a high equal scenario and another a low equal scenario, depicting contrasting gender roles in a fictional country. Previous studies indicate that an increase in female leadership and women's rights can act as a catalyst for masculinity threats, potentially leading to an increase in incel characteristics in some men, thereby contributing to a higher incel population in countries with greater female autonomy and gender equality, such as Sweden and Germany. The findings of this study partly align with these previous observations, suggesting that the scenario featuring the high equal scenario generated a higher threat to masculinity. However, this study did not find statistically significant results regarding incel characteristic tendencies. This perceived threat appears to contribute to a reactionary response manifested in incel-related attitudes characterized by misogyny and violence against women. This study emphasizes the urgent need to address these emerging social issues through political and educational initiatives aimed at redefining masculinity in more inclusive terms.
