This study aims to understand how external risks impact ports. We will show how ports, as service organizations, respond to these risks and what measures they take to mitigate their effects. We examine how external factors, such as significant global changes, influence port operations. The focus on external factors is due to a research gap, as most current studies address internal risks in ports. The study specifically looks at how major logistical ports in southern Sweden are affected by these changes. The work aims to enhance understanding of how ports manage external risks, respond to unexpected situations, and develop strategies to prevent and mitigate these risks.

Research questions: How does the port respond to external changes, and what strategies does it employ to manage the risks arising from these changes? How can the port work from an organizational perspective to manage external risks that indirectly affect it?

Methodology: In this work, we used a qualitative method and conducted semi-structured interviews to collect our empirical data.

Conclusion: Our study results indicate that ports are organizations operating in a global context and are therefore inevitably affected by external changes in various ways. The extent of this impact depends on how well-developed the port's risk management strategies are. In some cases, the risks for ports are not related to decreased volumes or supply chain delays, but rather to how they can manage significantly increased volumes. Here, ports can utilize organizational tools to evolve and become more agile and flexible organizations capable of meeting these demands. (Less)
