Research question: Which managerial roles do non-family CEOs perceive themselves to be taking in family owned businesses?
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate how non-family CEOs in family owned businesses experience the managerial roles they take on in their work.
Methodology: Through a qualitative study data has been collected by conducting semi structured interviews with non family CEO:s in family businesses. The study takes a social constructionist perspective and an abductive approach.
Theoretical perspective: The theoretical chapter deals with previous research on family businesses and managerial roles, with a particular focus on Mintzbergs framework.
Result: From the interviews conducted three roles were identified that non-family CEOs feel they are expected to fulfill. They are teachers, guardians of heritage and realists.
Conclusion: The study presentes that non-family CEOs experience the need to take on certain roles that in some aspects are unusual for their position. Non family CEOs adapt their work to suit the special nature of a family firm. (Less)
