- The tention between culture and nature - The view on nature and Sápmi in Sveriges Natur 1910-1928
Nature has always been a topic of human conversation, and today's debate is usually about how we are going to stop climate change. In the early 20th century, the first laws that protected nature were established in Sweden, and one actor that especially worked for more conservation was Svenska Naturskyddsföreningen. Every year since their establishment in 1909 they have published a yearbook with the name Sveriges Natur. This study aims to analyze the contributors' views on nature, and their view of the Swedish indigenous people - the Sámi.
Previous research shows that national parks were established to protect nature against human actions, and many of them were in Sápmi, where Sámi conducted reindeer herding. Other research shows that the writers in Sveriges Natur based their arguments in scientific, economic, historical, cultural, and aesthetic ideas, and this study aims to analyze how they were expressed in the articles. One theoretical perspective is discourse analysis and this study specifically uses David Spurr’s The Rhetoric of Empire where he speaks about twelve different ways to talk about colonized people, to see if they appear in Sveriges Natur.
One conclusion is that the Sámi usually are viewed as “the other” and under threat from civilization. Another conclusion is that the foremost view of nature is den outsinliga källan [the eternal source] where nature is understood as something in contrast to culture. (Less)
