(Less) - Abstract

Research question: How is innovative decision-making within family businesses influenced by socioemotional wealth?
Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to examine how the innovative decision-making process in a family business is influenced by social and moral aspects within SEW, supported by the FIBER framework.
Methodology: A qualitative case study conducted on a family business with semi-structured interviews from the owner family and employees. The empirical material consists of quotes from individual interviews with each interviewee and concerns innovation, tradition, decision-making, and socioemotional wealth.
Theoretical Perspective: The theoretical framework is based on previous research on socioemotional wealth, family businesses, innovation, and the innovation decision process model.
Result: The study has identified the impact that Socio-emotional wealth has on innovative decision-making related to family businesses. The results show that Socio-emotional wealth is indirectly considered in almost all decisions and is maintained by tradition, the company's history, and the mentality within the company.
Conclusions: The study has shown that innovative decision-making is influenced by socioemotional wealth according to the following factors: The importance of dialogue and long-term partners to enable innovation. Employees' close relationship with the owning family, where the family's values and culture have laid the foundation for long-term thinking and quality over economic results. The study has also shown that there is an internal split regarding innovative decision-making in terms of the process from idea to action. The step between idea and implementation of an innovation is considered easier based on the trust an employee has with the owning family. During a generational shift, it is common for dissonance to arise, creating a tug-of-war between the new generation's ideas and the old generation's traditional ways of working. (Less)
