- Abstract
- Aims and methods: This study examines the discourse surrounding honour-related violence and oppression, referred to as honour violence. A discourse analysis was conducted on material from the state and organisations working with HRVF, collaborating with midwives. The study aimed to combine the discourse with the midwives' crucial work in supporting victims.
Findings: The discourse revealed varying results related to stereotypes, gender, and culture. While no specific culture or religion was linked to honour violence, it was suggested to belong to non-Swedish communities. Gender was neutral, yet women’s specific vulnerability was highlighted. Midwives showed a strong understanding of honour violence norms, primarily from experience and organisational lectures rather than formal education. They focused on understanding specific situations and helping youth make decisions about their lives and safety. As grassroots bureaucrats, midwives balance reporting duties for maltreatment with their responsibility to the youth as clients.
Conclusions: The discourse highlighted the complexity of balancing non-discriminatory discussions while acknowledging the specific vulnerability of certain groups. The practical implications of the midwives' work show that stereotypes can be avoided through knowledge and conversations with affected youth. Despite occasional concerns for youth safety, midwives create safe spaces for discussing cultural issues and shaping futures without stigmatisation. However, the reception of youth exposed to honour violence may vary with each midwife, underscoring the importance of professional knowledge in decision-making. (Less)
