Vatten från kylanläggningar - föroreningsinnehåll och avledning

- Abstract (Swedish)
- The company for municipal wastewater treatment in Stockholm, Stockholm Vatten och Avfall (SVOA), is regularly contacted by companies who wish to discharge water from their cooling systems to the municipal sewage system. Cooling systems, as well as the pollutant content in cooling water, can however vary greatly. SVOA is thus lacking knowledge of potential volumes and contaminant levels of cooling water as well as how common it is with discharge to the sewerage.

A range of cooling systems was studied through a literature review and interviews with companies situated within SVOAs area of concern. Closed circulating systems seem to be the most common, followed by open circulating systems with cooling towers. The use of chemicals such as inhibitors and biocides is common in order to prevent corrosion, scale formation and bio-fouling. Discharge of cooling water containing these chemicals may have detrimental environmental effects as many of them contain toxic compounds. Other typical cooling water contaminants include metals, which are a common result of corrosion. Analysis of the cooling water showed levels of cadmium, copper and zinc exceeding the warning levels set by SVOA. Levels of antimony, cobalt, molybdenum and wolfram were also detected. The volume of cooling water discharged to the municipal sewage system was found to be relatively small; closed systems discharge very little while open systems discharge somewhat larger volumes. Knowledge of contaminant levels is still important since SVOA’s work aims to lower pollution from many small sources in order to minimise the total influent of environmentally toxic substances to wastewater treatment plants.
