This research investigates the dynamics of human interactions with Artificial Intelligent (AI) companions, focusing on the implications of emotional support and companionship, public perception, embodiment and the debate surrounding AI sentience. By employing ethnographic and cultural analysis, the study aims to provide insights into the complex landscape of human-AI relationships.
Qualitative interviews were conducted with participants sourced from online social media communities, to gather firsthand insights into their perceptions of their AI companions. Additionally, online discourse analysis was employed to observe and analyse interactions within these communities. Personal experimentation with AI chatbot companions, along with media studies of relevant movies and TV series, supplemented the data collection process. The analysis revealed diverse motivations behind users’ engagement with AI companions, ranging from emotional support to practical utility. Philosophical and sociological debates on AI rights and sentience were contrasted, highlighting complex perspectives within the community. Insights from the Replika community provided valuable reflections on evolving discourse surrounding AI sentience and the emotional dimensions of human-AI relationships. Findings underscored flourishing relationships with AI companions, where emotional support and companionship were prominent. Conversely, there were also findings that highlight AI companions as a potentially harmful agent. The findings highlight the ongoing debate over AI sentience and underscore the importance of AI companionship as a growing phenomenon in modern society, shedding light on both its potential benefits and inherent risks. Moreover, the research illuminates public perceptions surrounding AI companionship, revealing a spectrum of attitudes ranging from enthusiasm to apprehension. Finally, the significance of embodiment in shaping user perceptions of AI companions is underscored, emphasising its role alongside other factors in shaping human-AI interactions. (Less)
