Abstract
This thesis explores the complex relationship between ethnic identity and social mobility
within the Māori communities of Aotearoa New Zealand. Central to this research is the role
attributed to education, which is seen as a key element in both supporting the preservation of
cultural heritage and fostering socio-economic progress. The research examines the
contemporary challenges that Māori encounter in education and the labor market, and how
these challenges are intertwined with their cultural identity.
In essence, this study explores the inherent complexities of belonging to a minority ethnic
