With the purpose of giving a more nuanced understanding of the role of cultural diversity and its impact on trust within international teams, we build upon the current literature and contribute to it by furthering its comprehension and focusing on the social processes behind building trust in a team. Through qualitative research, an examination of an international (non-virtual) team located in Sweden is made regarding the impact of cultural diversity on the team and its effect on trust within the team. We conclude that the impact of cultural diversity is indirect on trust, in turn, cultural diversity appears to be the triggering factor that unleashes a dynamic process with other factors that intervene in trust. Said factors include social categorizations, team cohesion, information asymmetry, communication, varied perceptions of trust and leadership mediation. Lastly, we suggest a model that explains the process of trust in international groups, by linking groupings based on cultural diversity, social identities, information asymmetry, team cohesion and trust.
