Abstract
This study investigates the impact of overcrowding on indoor climate quality, thermal comfort, and mould risk in typical Swedish Million Homes Program apartments. This research focuses on the specific challenges posed by overcrowded living conditions in Million Program apartments, which often suffer from high occupant density.
Utilizing WUFI Plus a 70 m² apartment typical of the 60s & 70s Million Homes Program was modelled. The report compares newly developed occupant profiles for families with five to seven members with scaled-up profiles that have been used in previous studies but are suspected of giving misleading results. Utilizing WUFI Plus a 70 m² apartment typical of the 60s & 70s Million Homes Program was modelled. The report compares newly developed occupant profiles for families with five to seven members with scaled-up profiles that have been used in previous studies but are suspected of giving misleading results. The simulations assessed the influence of various factors including geography, building direction, solar protection, ventilation, and apartment position on indoor climate and mould risk.
The findings indicate that the newly developed occupant profiles as compared to the scaled-up profiles significantly increase the resulting indoor relative humidity while resulting in lower CO2-levels and indoor air temperature. Enhanced natural ventilation was evaluated as a mitigation measure for mould risk, demonstrating its potential effectiveness. The study underscores the importance of accurate occupant profiles and realistic ventilation to achieve realistic results on the adverse effects of overcrowding in these apartments. (Less)
