- Abstract
- This essay aims to analyze the depiction of an ideal soldier in order to research whether these depictions perpetuate values and ideals found in the theoretical framework of militarized masculinity and the logic of masculinist protection. The selected material consists of official documents from both the Swedish Armed Forces as well as the United States Armed Forces, which will be analyzed through a thematic analysis. Subsequently, a comparison of the two cases will be made to explore the possible contrasts, which is motivated by the presumed great differences between them as well as the deepening relations between the two nations following Sweden’s entrance into NATO. However, when comparing the two cases there is a large difference in how these characteristics are presented. The characteristics are more explicitly mentioned and prevalent in the documents from the United States Armed Forces than in the documents of the Swedish Armed Forces. (Less)
