- Cancer caregiving is currently including significant challenges, especially for cancer families as they have to face high treatment costs. This study analyzes the experience of cancer caregivers in Vietnam with the focus on financial hardship and different kinds of burden. Previous studies in Vietnam show that the rising cases of cancer in Vietnam have put severe pressure on family members, who lack adequate knowledge on cancer caregiving and do not know how to gain support from the healthcare system and health insurance policies. Using an autoethnographic perspective and applying Joan Tronto's ethics of care theory, this thesis emphasizes the difficulties cancer patients and their caregivers have experienced within the context of the healthcare system in Vietnam. This research analyzes the emotional, physical, financial, and social cultural impact on cancer caregiving, which is gained from the author's personal experiences and observations within the conceptual framework of caregiving stress burden. Furthermore, this study examines the role of government including health insurance policies and their impact on the accessibility and affordability of cancer treatment at the public hospital. The social cultural context of Vietnam, which strongly enhances the family traditional values and the application of Vietnamese herbs in cancer treatment due to financial hardship is also highlighted in this thesis. By highlighting these challenges, this thesis hopes to some extent encourage more healthcare policies and practices that address the needs of cancer patients and their families in Vietnam. (Less)
