- Abstract
- This study examines and identifies different attitudes towards narcotics among students at Lund University, exploring the underlying factors that influence the formation of these attitudes. Fourteen semi-structured interviews form the backbone of this research, from which we conduct a thematic analysis of the data. This thematic analysis utilizes the tripartite model of attitudes to discuss the formulation and expression of student attitudes to narcotics, in conjunction with theoretical grounding in social constructionism, social identities, and group prototypes. Those who did have a negative attitude toward narcotics saw themselves as outliers to the rest of the student population and both groups agreed that students in general are positive towards drugs. Our findings also illustrate a tendency for students with positive attitudes to drugs to use arguments based on affect, while those with a negative attitude are more likely to refer to cognition-based arguments. From our research, three distinct themes emerge as influential factors in attitude formation: 1. normalization of cannabis use, 2. usage within groups and social collectives, and 3. the student culture of drug use.
