Information i sammanflätning och förändring: En studie av ungdomars informationssökning med ChatGPT
(2024) ABMM54 20241Division of ALM, Digital Cultures and Publishing Studies
- Abstract
- The purpose of this thesis is to improve the understanding of how generative AI contributes to change the conditions for teens’ everyday information search, as well as to highlight how user and ChatGPT interact within information search. To achieve this, qualitative interviews with teens between the ages of 15 and 19 were conducted. In addition, prompts written by the teens to ChatGPT were collected and analyzed. The study has been performed with a sociomaterial approach to the gathering and analysis of the material. The results show how the ongoing entanglement of teens and chatbot leave imprints on the teens’ information search in general, and not just with ChatGPT. The agents’ intentions diverge. The teens describe how their main... (More)

The study has been performed with a sociomaterial approach to the gathering and analysis of the material. The results show how the ongoing entanglement of teens and chatbot leave imprints on the teens’ information search in general, and not just with ChatGPT. The agents’ intentions diverge. The teens describe how their main objective is information search, whereas the main purpose of ChatGPT is to generate text. Despite this, the interaction works. The teens describe how they not only adapt to the chatbot’s technological limitations, but how they also purposely use these limitations to get the information they want. The answers provided by ChatGPT are characterized by a framing of contextualization as well as including the user in reaching a conclusion. In this way, both user and chatbot can be said to initiate further conversation. The chatbot’s agency evolves, as a pedagogical authority as well as a conversational partner. The information practices described by the teens are strongly influenced by their schools’ discourses on ChatGPT use. The rules are not always clear, with some teachers banning ChatGPT, and some encouraging use. This is influencing how the teens use ChatGPT, as well as their descriptions of how they use it. Furthermore, the entanglement of chatbot and user, as well as additional agents, lead to new information being produced. ChatGPT’s function as generative AI also allows it to provide tailor made answers, and, in doing so, to fill information voids. With a performative approach, this information is a part of an ongoing becoming. The norms and values of internet culture and AI developers are appropriated and reproduced through the teens’ information search with ChatGPT. (Less)
