Abstract
This thesis examines the patterns and characteristics of the reasoning behind the military support provided to Ukraine by its Western partners within the European Union (Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands) following the Russian full-scale invasion in February 2022. The thesis investigates the characteristics of the official rhetoric of military aid supplies to Ukraine by examining the governments’ narratives and actions in a qualitative approach. Using the study of geopolitics, including the Heartland theory, it analyses the connection between strategic interests and the decision-making process. Thus, the thesis uses a thematic analysis approach to examine official bilateral government agreements to identify the key features and... (More)
This thesis examines the patterns and characteristics of the reasoning behind the military support provided to Ukraine by its Western partners within the European Union (Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands) following the Russian full-scale invasion in February 2022. The thesis investigates the characteristics of the official rhetoric of military aid supplies to Ukraine by examining the governments’ narratives and actions in a qualitative approach. Using the study of geopolitics, including the Heartland theory, it analyses the connection between strategic interests and the decision-making process. Thus, the thesis uses a thematic analysis approach to examine official bilateral government agreements to identify the key features and priorities reflected in these government-level interactions. The analysis reveals how strategic motivations are expressed to be then implemented. Hence, the methodology focuses on analysing the rhetoric used in the agreements to understand the relationship between the stated intentions and commitments of this particular case. The literature review is used to support these findings since it outlines the same patterns and contextualises the case in a broader foreign aid discussion. These findings underscore the importance of understanding the multifaceted nature of international military support between countries. Therefore, the thesis offers a nuanced perspective on the motivations and need for Western military aid to Ukraine at the level of official responses to it. (Less)
