Department of Economic History
Abstract
Academic interest in economic inequalities has investigated the patterns of
inequalities perpetuated by colonial rules across Africa over the past two decades.
The findings highlight that, at a country level, there are biased investment policies favoring European settlers and encouraging the extraction of resources.
Considering the importance of regional inequalities in Tunisia in the modern era,
this study aimed to investigate the extent of inequalities between the regions in
Tunisia. Using available public finance data looked at regionally, it was found that regions with higher concentration of European settlers received more investment in social welfare services and spending in infrastructure.
