EFFECTS OF SLOW ADAPTATION OF HIGH TECH SECURITY SOLUTIONS TO THE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF UGANDA
(2024)Department of Service Studies
- Abstract
- High Tech security solutions refer to advanced and innovative technologies designed to protect assets, data and individuals from various threats. These systems offer benefits that traditional security measures cannot match. Examples of high Technology security solutions include Biometric Access Control that uses fingerprints, iris and facial recognition, Surveillance drones with cameras for monitoring, AI powered Video Analytics that Analyses surveillance of suspicious activity, Blockchain Technology that secures sensitive data and transactions, Cyber security AI that detects to cyberthreats and responds to them in real time, Laser Intrusion detection systems that uses laser beams to create an inivisible fence that alarms when triggered.... The slow adoption of high-tech security solutions poses significant challenges to the social and economic
development of Uganda. This study investigates the effects of this slow adaptation and identifies factors contributing to it, alongside other factors affecting Uganda's development. Employing a mixed-methods research design, data was collected from government officials, security firm owners, and business owners using surveys and interviews. The socio-economic impact of slow adaptation reveals vulnerabilities to security threats (33.3%), hindered business growth (26.7%), and reduced public trust (20%). Causes of slow adaptation include a lack of financial resources (23.3%) and cultural resistance (20%). Beyond slow adaptation, factors affecting development
include political instability (20%) and limited access to education (30%). Reluctance in adopting advanced security technologies stems from financial constraints (23.3%) and regulatory barriers (13.3%). Strategies to accelerate adoption include increasing investment in security technologies, streamlining regulatory frameworks, and promoting public-private partnerships. Recommendations propose increasing investment, strengthening infrastructure, and enhancing capacity building. Furthermore, community engagement and incentivizing adoption are essential. Areas for further study include assessing the impact on crime rates, evaluating cybersecurity risks, and examining the socio-economic impacts of security investments. By implementing these recommendations, Uganda can address security gaps, enhance public safety, and foster sustainable socio-economic development. This study provides valuable insights for policymakers, stakeholders, and researchers to advance security initiatives and promote overall prosperity in Uganda. (Less)
