- Abstract
- Corporate sustainability (CS) has gained widespread recognition, coinciding with an increased focus on climate change. The media plays an important role in shaping public perceptions and policies regarding CS, the extent of non-financial information disclosure, and influencing how industries are viewed. However, the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector is significantly under-researched in relation to CS and its carbon footprint.
This thesis examines the portrayal of CS in the pharmaceutical industry, with a particular focus on Novo Nordisk A/S. This thesis examines the portrayal of CS in the pharmaceutical industry, with a particular focus on Novo Nordisk A/S. A qualitative pluralistic approach, complemented by quantitative elements, was employed to analyse media articles from selected Danish newspapers covering the period from 1990 to 2024. The objective of this study was to determine whether the media has focused on the sector's environmental footprint, applying Agenda-Setting theory to examine how the Danish media has described the sustainability efforts and environmental impacts of the pharmaceutical sector.
The findings reveal gaps in media coverage, including the exclusion of diverse viewpoints and accurate descriptions, with minimal focus on the sector's environmental footprint. This thesis underscores the necessity for a more comprehensive media approach that balances the portrayal of the pharmaceutical sector's positive and negative impacts. By doing so, the media can better fulfil its role as a social watchdog and contribute to corporate sustainability practices. (Less)
