Abstract
”It should be of use for the military enlightenment” : a study in History of Knowledge of The Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences publication Handlingar 1797–1825
This thesis presents an analysis of The Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences publication
Handlingar between 1797–1825 from the perspective of history of knowledge. The purpose
of this study is twofold. Partly to provide a greater understanding of which type of knowledge
was put in motion, who engaged as a knowledge actor and how the circulation of knowledge
related to contemporary events and crises. Partly to study how the circulation of knowledge
relates to what in international research is called the military enlightenment.
This study shows that Handlingar... (More)

This study shows that Handlingar contained a broad spectrum of subjects, for example
articles about infantry tactics, artillery test firing, healthcare, war history, military education
and mapmaking. The articles had in common that their purpose was to provide useful
information that was meant to save resources and to make the Swedish armed forces more
efficient. The study also shows that contemporary crises created a need for knowledge, which
seems to have caused knowledge to be put in motion in Handlingar.
This thesis also shows that the article writers, the knowledge actors, were a diverse group
of people. Both military and civilian, old and young, high and low along the social hierarchy
participated as knowledge actors in Handlingar. A common characteristic for most actors was
an education in natural science and/or experience from participating in war. This shows that
knowledge spread and circulated over professional borders.
The Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences presented its publication Handlingar as a
knowledge arena in the military sphere. With the aim to spread knowledge the publication
used Swedish as its language. The academy stressed that it was not the author that was to be
reviewed, but the content of the article. If the reader did not agree with the author the
academy encouraged the reader to send remarks on the article to refute the subject to make
progress in the science of war.
The study argues that the Royal Swedish Academy of Wars publication Handlingar can be
seen as an example of a Swedish military enlightenment. (Less)
