Abstract
This essay examines how the Swedish alternative news site Samnytt creates a counter hegemonic narrative and presents an alternative world view through their framing of gang crime. With a qualitative content analysis this essay explores how these counter hegemonic narratives are constructed and how they can be understood through a framework of populist- and right-wing populist ideas and values. The empirical data consists of 20 news articles about gang crime in Sweden posted on Samnytt during the month of September of 2023. Our analysis implies that Samnytt creates a counter hegemonic narrative strongly influenced by populist- and right-wing populist ideas and values, the most notable being that gang crime is a direct consequence of... Our analysis implies that Samnytt creates a counter hegemonic narrative strongly influenced by populist- and right-wing populist ideas and values, the most notable being that gang crime is a direct consequence of immigration. These values become particularly prominent through recurring nativist and authoritarian elements in the empirical data, where a consistent negative narrative about immigrants and a central focus on criminal policies and tougher penalties are presented. Another populist element that has been identified is that Samnytt positions themselves a part of “the people” and therefore in position to actors portrayed as a part of the elite. Furthermore, the analysis reveals that Samnytt’s reporting on gang crime indicates a broader depiction of ideas and values that Samnytt expresses regarding Swedish society on a macro level. The results of the study show that Samnytt, through its news reporting, constructs and conveys a counter-hegemony influenced by right-wing populist ideas and values, thereby creating an alternative perception of reality that is presented as natural and self-evident.
