Abstract
Selective housing provision is uncommon in Sweden but is increasingly recognized as a necessary approach to combat the growing issue of housing inequality. This study examines the Kymmendö model and the Farsta project by Stockholm City Mission, a pilot initiative aimed at addressing housing inequality in Sweden through selective cooperative rental housing. Utilizing Göran Therborn's three-dimensional inequality framework, operationalized through Martin Grander’s concept of housing inequality, the research explores how the model reduces barriers for marginalized groups to access secure and long-term housing. Based on document studies and semi-structured interviews, the findings demonstrate that differentiated rent setting and need-based... (More)

Utilizing Göran Therborn's three-dimensional inequality framework, operationalized through Martin Grander’s concept of housing inequality, the research explores how the model reduces barriers for marginalized groups to access secure and long-term housing. Based on document studies and semi-structured interviews, the findings demonstrate that differentiated rent setting and need-based allocation enhance housing security and social inclusion. Nonetheless, challenges related to the financing of housing and governmental action underscore obstacles to expand the model. By addressing structural homelessness, the Kymmendö model provides valuable insights into alternative housing solutions within Sweden’s predominantly universal housing regime. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of selective housing models’ role in reducing housing inequality and enhancing social cohesion. (Less)
