- Abstract
- Children placed in foster care are a vulnerable group. In order to investigate what makes these children thrive, the theoretical concept of resilience could be used. There is currently a lack of studies that employ a resilience perspective and focus on what children in foster care believe strengthens them. Therefore, this study explored what promotes resilience in children in foster care, guided by three research questions: (1) How do children in foster care describe themselves, their schools, and their relationships? (2) What specific challenges do these children face? (3) How do these children cope with the difficulties they encounter? Seven children aged twelve to eighteen, currently or recently placed in foster care, were interviewed... (More)

(2) What specific challenges do these children face? (3) How do these children cope with the difficulties they encounter? Seven children aged twelve to eighteen, currently or recently placed in foster care, were interviewed with the Friends and Family Interview. Thematic analysis was employed to find patterns in the data to facilitate interpretation. This resulted in three themes: (1) Navigating one’s world, (2) Between support and betrayal, and (3) My friends are my family. Themes and subthemes illustrate challenges that the children face, while also highlighting strategies for managing daily life. The children also described supportive adults, while friends were discerned as particularly important as well as crucial to their wellbeing. A conflict between independence and trust issues appears central. The importance of interviewing children as a means to gain knowledge of their inner worlds is discussed. Finally, several practical implications are considered, including the importance of increasing placement stability and viewing the primary task of the foster home as providing a family rather than being a welfare intervention. - Abstract (Swedish)
(2) Vilka specifika svårigheter möter barn i familjehem? (More)
