- Abstract
- This thesis examines the role of queer music as a form of counter-hegemonic cul
tural capital and as a subaltern counterpublics in Lebanon, focusing on the Lebanese
band Mashrou’ Leila. By analyzing the band’s lyrics and music through a multi
modal critical discourse analysis, it is explored how their songs challenge dominant
sociopolitical narratives and provide a voice for LGBTQ+ identities in a context
marked by systemic oppression. The research identifies themes of queerness, gen
der fluidity, and resistance against societal norms and expectations, highlighting
their transgressive notion. The study contributes to the understanding of popular
music as a medium of knowledge production and a space for imagining alternative
